Nitish Rana is an Indian cricketer who plays primarily as a left-handed middle-order batsman and occasional right-arm off-break bowler. He has represented Delhi in domestic cricket and has been a regular fixture in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he is best known for his association with the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise.

Background

Born and raised in Delhi, Rana came up through the city's age-group cricket structure. He was part of India's squad for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates, alongside contemporaries who would later move into senior Indian cricket.

Domestic career

Rana represents Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has been among the productive batsmen in Delhi's domestic line-up, contributing in both the longer format and the limited-overs competitions.

Indian Premier League

Rana made his IPL debut for the Mumbai Indians, with whom he was part of the squad that won the title in 2017. Ahead of the 2018 season he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he developed into a senior batting figure. With KKR he has batted across the top and middle order and been used as a part-time off-spin option.

During the 2023 IPL season, Rana was appointed captain of Kolkata Knight Riders following the unavailability of the franchise's first-choice captain, leading the side through that edition of the tournament. He has since also featured for Rajasthan Royals in the league.

Style of play

Rana is known for a strong bottom-handed left-handed stroke play, particularly through the leg side, and is regarded as an effective player of spin in the middle overs of T20 cricket. His off-break bowling is used as a tactical option, often against left-handed batters.

Significance

Rana is among the prominent batsmen produced by Delhi's domestic system in the post-2010 generation and has been a long-serving IPL player, with experience of championship-winning squads as well as a stint in franchise captaincy.
