Overview
The National Institute of Technology, Raipur (NIT Raipur) is a public technical university located in Raipur, the capital of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) established by the Government of India and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes, primarily in engineering, technology, sciences and management.

Background
The institution traces its origins to 1956, when it was founded as the Government Engineering College (GEC), Raipur. At the time of its establishment, Raipur was part of the erstwhile state of Madhya Pradesh, and the college was affiliated with universities in that state. Following the formation of Chhattisgarh in 2000, the college came under the jurisdiction of the new state government before being elevated to national status.
The college was conferred the status of a National Institute of Technology by the Government of India in 2005, becoming the first centrally funded technical institute in Chhattisgarh. With the enactment of the NIT Act in 2007, it was formally designated an Institute of National Importance.
Campus
The campus is situated on G. E. Road in Raipur and houses academic departments, administrative buildings, hostels, laboratories, workshops, a central library and sporting facilities. The institute is located within the urban area of Raipur, providing access to industrial and civic infrastructure in central India.

NIT Raipur offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degrees at the undergraduate level, alongside Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programmes. Admission to undergraduate engineering courses is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling.
