Overview
The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (NIT Durgapur), is a public technical and engineering university located in Durgapur, in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. It is one of the thirty-one National Institutes of Technology (NITs) recognised under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, and operates as an Institute of National Importance funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Education.

Background
The institute was established as one of the earliest Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) set up jointly by the Government of India and the Government of West Bengal under a national scheme to expand higher technical education across the states. It served as the regional engineering college for West Bengal and admitted students from across India under a quota-based system designed to encourage inter-state mobility among engineering students.
Located in the planned industrial township of Durgapur, the campus is situated near the Damodar river in the eastern industrial belt of West Bengal, an area historically associated with steel, mining and heavy engineering industries.
History and chronology
- Regional Engineering College era: Founded as REC Durgapur, the college functioned as a centrally sponsored institution affiliated to the University of Burdwan for the award of degrees.
- Conversion to NIT: Along with other RECs across the country, the institute was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology and granted the status of a Deemed University, bringing it under direct central administration.
- Institute of National Importance: With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, NIT Durgapur was designated an Institute of National Importance, empowered to award its own degrees.
Academics
NIT Durgapur offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in engineering, technology, sciences, management and humanities. Undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes are offered in core engineering disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and communication, computer science, chemical, metallurgical and materials, and biotechnology engineering. The institute also offers Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes through its various departments and schools.
Admission to undergraduate programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process, while postgraduate admissions are based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and other national-level examinations.
Campus
The residential campus is located within the Durgapur urban area and houses academic departments, central facilities such as a library and computer centre, hostels for students, faculty and staff residences, and sports and recreational facilities. Durgapur is well connected by the Eastern Railway's Howrah–Delhi main line and by National Highway 19 (the Grand Trunk Road), which links the city to Kolkata and Asansol.
Significance
As one of the first generation of Regional Engineering Colleges and a long-established centre of technical education in eastern India, NIT Durgapur has played a notable role in supplying engineering talent to Indian industry, public sector undertakings and academia. Its location in the Durgapur–Asansol industrial region historically linked the institute to industries such as the Durgapur Steel Plant, Alloy Steels Plant and Mining and Allied Machinery Corporation, supporting research and training collaborations in metallurgy, mechanical engineering and allied fields.
