Background

The institute traces its origins to the Paddy Processing Research Centre (PPRC), which was established in Thanjavur to undertake applied research on rice and paddy processing, drawing on the region's traditional importance as a major rice-producing area in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu. Over time, the institute's mandate widened from paddy-centric research to a broader portfolio covering grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, fish, and value-added food products.

It was subsequently restructured and renamed the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT), and later the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), reflecting its expanding role in supporting the national food processing sector through education, training, and incubation.

Status as an Institute of National Importance

Through legislation passed by the Parliament of India, the institute was upgraded to the status of an Institute of National Importance, alongside its sister institute at Kundli, Haryana. As part of this upgrade, the Thanjavur campus was renamed the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management, Thanjavur (NIFTEM-T). The Act empowers the institutes to grant their own degrees and to function with greater academic and administrative autonomy.

Academics

NIFTEM-T offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in food technology and allied disciplines. Its academic activities combine engineering and technology coursework with components on food safety, quality management, and entrepreneurship development. The institute also conducts skill-development and short-term training programmes for entrepreneurs, farmers, and industry professionals.

Research and Incubation

The institute houses laboratories and pilot-scale facilities for product development, food packaging, and process engineering. It supports start-ups in the food processing sector through a business incubator that provides mentoring, prototype development, and shared infrastructure. Research areas include rice and millet processing, post-harvest technology, non-thermal food processing, traditional Indian foods, and waste utilisation.

Outreach

NIFTEM-T plays an implementing role for several schemes of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. It conducts capacity-building programmes for entrepreneurs and self-help groups, supports the development of One District One Product (ODOP) initiatives, and provides technical handholding under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme.

Significance

As one of the two national institutes dedicated to food technology in India, NIFTEM-T occupies a central place in the country's food processing ecosystem. Its location in Thanjavur, a historic agrarian region, links it closely with paddy and millet processing research, while its national mandate extends its work across the country's diverse food industries.
