Narsinghpur district

Narsinghpur district is an administrative district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It forms part of the Jabalpur division and lies in the central part of the state, within the Narmada valley. The district takes its name from its headquarters town, Narsinghpur, which derives its name from a temple dedicated to Narsingh, an avatar of Vishnu.

Geography

The district is situated in the central Narmada basin, with the Narmada River forming a significant geographical feature along its northern boundary. The terrain comprises fertile alluvial plains in the river valley, flanked by the Vindhya range to the north and the Satpura range to the south. This valley setting makes the area agriculturally productive, with black cotton soil supporting a range of crops.

The district shares boundaries with several neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Jabalpur, Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram), Chhindwara, Seoni, Sagar and Damoh.

Administration

The district is administered by a District Magistrate and Collector, supported by Sub-Divisional Magistrates at the tehsil level. For police administration, a Superintendent of Police heads the district. Narsinghpur is divided into several tehsils and development blocks, with Narsinghpur town serving as the seat of administration, judiciary and major district-level offices.

Economy

The economy of Narsinghpur district is predominantly agrarian. The fertile soils of the Narmada valley support the cultivation of sugarcane, wheat, gram (chickpea), pulses and oilseeds. Sugarcane is a particularly notable crop, and the district has long been associated with sugar and jaggery (gur) production. Allied activities include dairying and small-scale agro-processing.

Transport

The district is connected by road and rail to other parts of Madhya Pradesh. The Mumbai–Howrah railway corridor passes through the district, providing rail links to Jabalpur, Bhopal and other major cities. National and state highways traverse the district, linking it with Jabalpur to the east and Hoshangabad/Bhopal to the west.

Culture and notable places

The district is home to a number of religious and historical sites along the Narmada. Pilgrim centres on the river, traditional fairs and temples form part of the district's cultural fabric. The town of Narsinghpur itself is associated with the Narsingh temple from which it draws its name.
