Geography
Seoni district is situated on the Satpura range, with most of its terrain forming a plateau interspersed with hills and forested tracts. The Wainganga river, a major tributary of the Godavari, rises within the district and drains a significant portion of its area. The Pench river, which gives its name to the Pench National Park and Pench Tiger Reserve, also flows through the district.
The district shares borders with Jabalpur, Mandla, Balaghat, Chhindwara and Narsinghpur districts of Madhya Pradesh, and with the state of Maharashtra on its southern side. Forests in the district are predominantly dry and moist deciduous, with teak and bamboo as characteristic species.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with subordinate sub-divisional, tehsil and block-level officers. Seoni district is divided into several tehsils and development blocks, with Seoni town serving as the principal urban centre. For policing, it is headed by a Superintendent of Police.
History and culture
The region has long been associated with the forests of central India that inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book; the Pench landscape, partly within Seoni district, is widely identified with the setting of these stories. Historically the area was part of the Gond kingdoms of central India and later came under Maratha and then British rule, becoming part of the Central Provinces. After the reorganisation of states in 1956, the district was incorporated into Madhya Pradesh.
Hindi is the principal language of administration and daily use, while Gondi and other tribal languages are spoken among Adivasi communities, particularly the Gond and Baiga.
Economy
The economy of Seoni district is predominantly agricultural. Major crops include paddy, wheat, pulses, soybean and oilseeds. Forest produce, dairying and small-scale industry contribute additional livelihoods. The district is also known for cattle, including the Nimari and local indigenous breeds used in agriculture.
Wildlife and tourism
The Pench National Park and Pench Tiger Reserve, spread across parts of Seoni and Chhindwara districts in Madhya Pradesh and extending into Maharashtra, are the most prominent natural attractions. The reserve is part of Project Tiger and supports populations of tiger, leopard, gaur, sambar, chital and a wide variety of birdlife.
Transport
Seoni lies on National Highway 44 (the north–south corridor connecting Srinagar to Kanyakumari), which provides road connectivity to Nagpur in the south and Jabalpur in the north. The district is connected by state highways to neighbouring districts, while the nearest major railway junctions and airports are at Nagpur and Jabalpur.
