NTR district

Overview

NTR district is an administrative district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It was carved out as part of the reorganisation of districts in Andhra Pradesh that came into effect on 4 April 2022, when the state government restructured its 13 existing districts into 26. The district is named in honour of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (popularly known as NTR), the celebrated Telugu film actor and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh who founded the Telugu Desam Party.

Background

Before the 2022 reorganisation, the area now constituting NTR district formed the western part of the erstwhile Krishna district. The Andhra Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, undertook the bifurcation of older districts to align administrative boundaries broadly with parliamentary constituencies and to bring governance closer to the people. The new districts were notified by gazette and operationalised on Ugadi day, 4 April 2022.

Geography

NTR district lies in the Coastal Andhra region. It is bounded by Eluru district to the east, the residual Krishna district to the south, Palnadu and Guntur districts to the south-west, and Telangana to the north and west. The Krishna River flows through the district, with Vijayawada situated on its northern bank. The terrain includes the river plains around Vijayawada and the hilly, forested tracts of the eastern fringe of the Nallamala range in the western mandals such as Nuzvid's neighbouring uplands and the Kondapalli reserve forest area.

Administration

The district headquarters is at Vijayawada, the largest city of the district and a major commercial and transport hub of Andhra Pradesh. The district is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with the police headed by a Commissioner of Police for the Vijayawada city region and a Superintendent of Police for the rural areas. Administratively, the district is organised into revenue divisions and mandals, with constituent towns including Nuzvid, Tiruvuru, Jaggayyapeta, and Nandigama, alongside Vijayawada.

Economy and infrastructure

Vijayawada anchors the district's economy, serving as a centre for trade, education, healthcare, and government services. The district hosts the headquarters of South Central Railway's Vijayawada Division, one of the busiest railway junctions in India. Agriculture remains important in the rural mandals, with paddy, pulses, mango, and other horticultural crops cultivated; Nuzvid is well known for its mango varieties. Cement and limestone-based industries are prominent around Jaggayyapeta, and the Kondapalli area is associated with the historic Kondapalli toys, a Geographical Indication-tagged handicraft.

Culture and notable places

  • Kanaka Durga Temple, Indrakeeladri, Vijayawada — a major Shakti pilgrimage centre on the banks of the Krishna.
  • Kondapalli Fort — a medieval hill fort with layers of Reddy, Qutb Shahi, and British history.
  • Undavalli Caves region and other rock-cut sites associated with early medieval Andhra (located across the river but historically linked).
  • Prakasam Barrage across the Krishna River at Vijayawada.
  • Mogalrajapuram Caves — early rock-cut cave temples in Vijayawada.

Significance

The creation of NTR district reflected both administrative rationalisation and the political symbolism of commemorating N. T. Rama Rao, whose legacy in Telugu cinema and state politics is deeply rooted in the region. With Vijayawada as its headquarters, the district encompasses one of Andhra Pradesh's principal urban, transportation, and cultural centres.
