Geography
Krishna district lies on the eastern coast of the Indian peninsula, bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east. It is drained primarily by the Krishna River, which forms a fertile delta in the eastern parts of the district. The district shares boundaries with neighbouring districts of Andhra Pradesh including those formed from the erstwhile Guntur, West Godavari, NTR and Eluru regions following successive administrative reorganisations. The terrain is largely flat in the deltaic eastern portion, while the western and northern parts include undulating uplands.
Administration
The district headquarters is at Machilipatnam (also known as Bandar), a historic port town on the Bay of Bengal. The district is divided into revenue divisions, mandals, and gram panchayats for administrative purposes, and is part of the broader local self-government structure of Andhra Pradesh. In April 2022, the Government of Andhra Pradesh reorganised the state's districts, and parts of the former Krishna district were carved out to form the new NTR district, with Vijayawada serving as the headquarters of the new district.
History
The region that constitutes present-day Krishna district has a long recorded history. It was part of successive South Indian polities including the Satavahanas, the Eastern Chalukyas, the Kakatiyas, and the Vijayanagara Empire. Machilipatnam emerged as a significant maritime trading port from the medieval period, attracting Portuguese, Dutch, French, and English traders. The Dutch and the English East India Company established factories at Machilipatnam, and the town became one of the early centres of European commercial activity on the Coromandel Coast.
During the colonial period, the area formed part of the Madras Presidency under British India. After Indian independence in 1947, it became part of Madras State, and following the linguistic reorganisation of states in 1953, it was incorporated into the newly formed Andhra State and subsequently into Andhra Pradesh in 1956.
Economy
Agriculture is the mainstay of the district's economy, with the Krishna delta supporting extensive cultivation of paddy, sugarcane, pulses, and horticultural crops. Fisheries, both inland and marine, are an important sector along the coast. The district also has industrial and trade activity, with handloom weaving (notably the kalamkari textile tradition) and small-scale manufacturing forming part of the economic base.
Culture
Krishna district is part of the Telugu cultural heartland, and the language of administration and daily use is Telugu. The district has contributed to Telugu literature, classical music, and the performing arts, including Kuchipudi, the classical dance form that originates from the village of Kuchipudi in this region. Traditional crafts such as Machilipatnam kalamkari are recognised under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act.
Transport
The district is well connected by road and rail. National highways link it to other parts of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining states, and the South Central Railway operates major routes through the district. Vijayawada, although now part of NTR district after the 2022 reorganisation, has historically served as a major rail and road junction associated with the Krishna region. Machilipatnam port has been the subject of port development proposals over the years.
