Background

Vijay was born in Chennai and developed his cricket through Tamil Nadu's age-group system. He attended Vivekananda College in Chennai before establishing himself in the state's senior side. He came to wider attention through performances in the Ranji Trophy for Tamil Nadu, where his ability to bat long periods at the top of the order marked him out as a red-ball prospect.

Domestic career

Vijay made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in 2006-07. Over subsequent seasons he became a mainstay of the Tamil Nadu top order in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic competitions, contributing centuries in both first-class and List A cricket. He has also led Tamil Nadu in domestic competitions during parts of his career.

International career

Test cricket

Vijay was called up to the Indian Test side in 2008 as a replacement for Gautam Gambhir for the home series against Australia, making his debut at Nagpur. After in-and-out appearances early on, he cemented his place from around 2013, forming opening partnerships with Shikhar Dhawan and later with KL Rahul. He scored Test centuries against Australia, England, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and was particularly noted for double centuries scored in home Tests, including a 167 against Australia at Hyderabad and a 144 against Australia at Brisbane in 2014.

He was a key figure on India's overseas tours of England (2014, 2018) and Australia (2014-15), where his ability to leave the ball outside off stump drew comparison with classical openers. He was part of the Indian Test squad through much of the 2014-2018 cycle under captains M. S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

Limited-overs cricket

Vijay made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2010 against Zimbabwe. While his white-ball international career was less sustained than his Test career, he was a member of the India squad that won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England.

Indian Premier League

Vijay was an early signing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and was part of the franchise's title-winning sides in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Champions League T20 victories of 2010 and 2014. He played a notable innings of 95 in the 2011 IPL final against Royal Challengers Bangalore. After the suspension of CSK in 2016, he played for Delhi Daredevils, and subsequently turned out for Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore at different stages of his IPL career.

Playing style

Vijay was regarded primarily as a technically correct opener with strong fundamentals against pace and spin. His strengths included judgement of the off stump, defensive solidity, and the ability to score off the back foot. He was also effective against spin in subcontinental conditions, using the sweep and stepping out to drive.
