Background
Rahul was born in Mangalore (Mangaluru), Karnataka. His father, K. N. Lokesh, was a professor and a former director at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. Rahul moved to Bangalore as a teenager to pursue cricket more seriously and developed his game through age-group cricket in Karnataka.
Domestic career
Rahul made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy season. He emerged as a leading batter in domestic cricket, contributing to Karnataka's Ranji Trophy titles in 2013–14 and 2014–15. He was the leading run-scorer in the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season and was rewarded with selection to the senior India squad.
International career
Test cricket
Rahul made his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in December 2014 against Australia. In the next Test at Sydney in January 2015, he scored his maiden Test century. He has scored Test hundreds in multiple countries, including Australia, England, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and South Africa, making him one of the few Indian openers to score centuries across diverse overseas conditions.
Limited-overs cricket
Rahul made his ODI and T20I debuts on India's tour of Zimbabwe in June 2016. He scored a century on his ODI debut, becoming the first Indian to do so. In T20Is, he registered a century against the West Indies in 2016. He has been a regular in India's white-ball setup and was part of the squads for ICC events including the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final.
Captaincy
Rahul has captained India in limited-overs and Test matches in the absence of regular captains. He led India in Test matches in South Africa in early 2022 and has captained the side in ODIs and T20Is on multiple occasions.
Indian Premier League
Rahul began his IPL career with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 and later played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He joined Kings XI Punjab (later Punjab Kings) in 2018 and served as captain from 2020 to 2021. In the 2022 IPL auction, he was signed by the new franchise Lucknow Super Giants and appointed captain, leading the team to playoffs in their debut season. He later moved to Delhi Capitals.
Playing style and significance
Rahul is regarded for his classical technique, ability to play across formats, and versatility in batting positions—from opener to middle-order—and as a wicket-keeper-batter. His record of scoring centuries on debut in Tests (in Sydney was his second Test) and ODIs, along with hundreds in T20Is, places him among a small group of cricketers with international centuries in all three formats.
Personal life
In January 2023, Rahul married actress Athiya Shetty, daughter of actor Suniel Shetty, in a private ceremony in Khandala, Maharashtra.
