Background
The institute is named after Motilal Nehru, the Indian lawyer and nationalist leader. It was originally established as the Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (MNREC), one of the seventeen Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) set up across India as a joint venture between the central government and the respective state governments. As an REC, it was jointly funded and administered by the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, while being academically affiliated to the University of Allahabad.
History
MNREC was founded in 1961 as part of the national programme to expand engineering education in independent India. It functioned as a regional engineering college affiliated to the University of Allahabad for several decades. In 2002, the institute was conferred Deemed University status and renamed Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology. Under the National Institutes of Technology Act passed by the Parliament of India in 2007, MNNIT was declared an Institute of National Importance, bringing it on par with other NITs and the Indian Institutes of Technology in terms of statutory recognition.

Campus
The MNNIT campus is situated in Teliarganj, in the northern part of Prayagraj, near the confluence area of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The residential campus houses academic blocks, hostels, staff quarters, libraries, sports facilities and laboratories.
Significance
As one of the older NITs, MNNIT Allahabad has played a notable role in technical education in northern India, contributing alumni to industry, academia, public services and research institutions in India and abroad. Its transition from a state-affiliated regional college to a centrally administered Institute of National Importance reflects the broader restructuring of India's higher technical education system in the early 21st century.
