Geography
The district lies in the transitional zone between the Indo-Gangetic plain and the Vindhya Range. The Ganges flows through the northern portion, while the southern parts are characterised by forested plateaus, sandstone hills and seasonal streams. The Son and its tributaries drain parts of the south. The terrain has historically supported quarrying of sandstone, and the area is dotted with waterfalls and rock shelters, several of which contain prehistoric paintings.
Administration
Mirzapur district is divided into tehsils including Sadar (Mirzapur), Chunar, Lalganj and Marihan. Administration is headed by a District Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police responsible for law and order. The district is part of the Mirzapur Lok Sabha constituency for the Indian Parliament.
History
The region has a long history of human settlement, attested by rock paintings in the Vindhyan hills around sites such as Lakhania and Wyndham Falls. Chunar, in the district, was an important medieval fortress that changed hands among the Afghans, Mughals and the British, and is associated with rulers including Sher Shah Suri. The town of Mirzapur grew as a major commercial entrepôt in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly for cotton, lac and the carpet industry, with trade links extending across northern India.
The district was reorganised in 1989 when its southern portion was carved out to form the new Sonbhadra district.
Economy
The economy combines agriculture, mining and traditional manufacturing. Paddy, wheat, pulses and oilseeds are the main crops. Mirzapur is widely known for its hand-knotted carpet industry, centred on the Mirzapur–Bhadohi belt, and for brassware. Sandstone quarrying, mineral-based industry and thermal power generation are important in the southern uplands.
Culture and pilgrimage
The district is a significant pilgrimage destination. The Vindhyachal temple, dedicated to the goddess Vindhyavasini, is among the prominent Shakti shrines of northern India and attracts large numbers of pilgrims, particularly during Navaratri. Other religious and heritage sites include Ashtabhuja and Kali Khoh temples, and the Chunar Fort.
Transport
Mirzapur lies on the Howrah–Delhi main railway line, with Mirzapur and Chunar being important stations. National Highway 19 (the Grand Trunk Road) and other state highways connect the district to Varanasi, Prayagraj and Rewa. The nearest major airport is at Varanasi.
