Career
Early work
Before his breakthrough on Hindi television, Chandwadkar appeared in Marathi stage productions and small-screen roles. He also took up supporting parts in Hindi serials, which built the screen experience that led to his casting in an ensemble sitcom.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, produced by Asit Kumarr Modi's Neela Film Productions, premiered on SAB TV (now Sony SAB) on 28 July 2008. The show is loosely based on the column Duniya Ne Undha Chashma written by Gujarati humourist Taarak Mehta in the magazine Chitralekha. Chandwadkar plays Atmaram Tukaram Bhide, a school teacher and the elected secretary of Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society in Mumbai. The character is portrayed as disciplined, frugal, soft-spoken in Marathi-accented Hindi, and frequently caught between his duties as society secretary and the antics of his neighbours.
Bhide's family on the show includes his wife Madhavi Bhide and daughter Sonu (Sonalika Bhide). His friendships with characters such as Jethalal Champaklal Gada, Taarak Mehta, Krishnan Iyer, Dr. Hansraj Hathi and Roshan Singh Sodhi form one of the central comedic pillars of the series. The role has given Chandwadkar wide nationwide recognition, given the show's status as one of the longest-running Hindi sitcoms.
Other appearances
Alongside the sitcom, Chandwadkar has made guest and promotional appearances on Sony SAB programming and crossover episodes featuring the Gokuldham characters, as well as public events linked to the show.
Significance
Through the character of Bhide, Chandwadkar has contributed to one of Indian television's most familiar comic archetypes — the upright Maharashtrian middle-class teacher — and to a sitcom that has run continuously for more than a decade and a half, becoming a cultural reference point in family entertainment on Hindi television.
