Background

The company was established in 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers Jagdish Chandra Mahindra and Kailash Chandra Mahindra along with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. Following the Partition of India in 1947, Ghulam Muhammad migrated to Pakistan, where he later became the country's first finance minister and subsequently its Governor-General. The firm was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948.

The company began its automotive operations by assembling the Willys Jeep in India under licence, an association that shaped the design heritage of its later utility vehicles. Over the decades, M&M expanded into tractor manufacturing, light commercial vehicles, sport utility vehicles, and eventually passenger cars and electric vehicles.
