Background
Tech Mahindra was originally established as a joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra Limited and British Telecommunications plc (BT) of the United Kingdom, and was initially known as Mahindra British Telecom (MBT). The company began operations focused on providing software and engineering services to BT, which gave it a deep early specialisation in telecommunications technology and operations support systems.
Over time, BT progressively reduced its stake, and the firm was rebranded as Tech Mahindra. The company expanded its client base beyond BT to include other telecommunications operators and equipment vendors, before broadening into wider enterprise IT services.
Acquisition of Satyam
A defining event in the company's history was its acquisition of Satyam Computer Services in 2009, following the corporate fraud at Satyam disclosed earlier that year. Tech Mahindra emerged as the successful bidder in the government-supervised process, and the acquired entity was rebranded Mahindra Satyam. In 2013, Mahindra Satyam was merged into Tech Mahindra, creating one of the largest Indian IT services companies and significantly expanding its presence in enterprise applications, BPO, and verticals beyond telecom.
Services and operations
The company's portfolio spans application development and maintenance, cloud and infrastructure services, cybersecurity, engineering services, network services for communications service providers, customer experience management, and emerging technology offerings in artificial intelligence, 5G, and the Internet of Things. Its industry verticals include communications, media and entertainment, banking and financial services, insurance, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and the public sector.
Tech Mahindra operates delivery centres and offices across multiple continents and employs a large global workforce, with major delivery hubs in India in cities including Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Noida, and Mumbai.

Its early specialisation in telecom positioned it as a preferred partner for global communications service providers, and the Satyam acquisition is regarded as a notable example of corporate turnaround within the Indian IT industry.
