Background
The National Law University movement in India began with the establishment of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, in 1987. Following its model, several states enacted legislation to create autonomous law universities. Maharashtra, despite being one of the largest states in India and home to the Bombay High Court, did not have a dedicated NLU until 2014, when the state legislature passed the Maharashtra National Law University Act to create three universities at Mumbai, Nagpur and Aurangabad.
Academic programmes
MNLU Mumbai offers integrated undergraduate legal education leading to the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree, along with postgraduate programmes in law (LL.M.) and doctoral research (Ph.D.). Admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate courses is conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities.
Governance
As provided under the founding Act, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court serves as the ex officio Chancellor of the university. The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, who is the principal academic and executive officer. Its governance structure includes a General Council, an Executive Council, an Academic Council and a Finance Committee, in line with other National Law Universities in India.
Campus
The university functions from a campus in the Mumbai metropolitan region. In its initial years, it operated from temporary premises while a permanent campus was developed in the Mumbai Suburban district.
Significance
MNLU Mumbai is significant as the first National Law University in Maharashtra and is located in close proximity to the Bombay High Court and India's principal commercial and financial hub. The setting provides students access to one of the country's most active legal markets, including commercial litigation, corporate law practice, securities regulation and arbitration. The university contributes to legal research, policy work and the training of lawyers, judges and academicians.
