Background
The National Law University movement in India began with the establishment of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, in 1986, and has since expanded across several states. To strengthen legal education within Maharashtra, the state legislature enacted the Maharashtra National Law University Act, 2014, providing for the creation of three NLUs in the state — at Mumbai, Nagpur, and Aurangabad. MNLU Aurangabad was set up under this statute alongside its sister institutions.
The university serves the Marathwada region, an area that historically had limited access to specialised legal education compared to western Maharashtra. Its establishment was intended to broaden the geographical spread of high-quality legal training in the state.
Academics
MNLU Aurangabad offers an integrated undergraduate programme in law leading to the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) degree, along with postgraduate study in law (LL.M.). Admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities.
The curriculum follows the framework prescribed for National Law Universities, combining core legal subjects with social sciences, clinical legal education, moot court training, and research components in line with Bar Council of India norms.
Governance
As laid down in the Maharashtra National Law University Act, 2014, the university is headed by a Chancellor, with a Vice-Chancellor as the principal academic and executive officer. The Governor of Maharashtra serves as the Visitor. The General Council, Executive Council, and Academic Council oversee policy, administration, and academic matters respectively.
Significance
MNLU Aurangabad forms part of the network of National Law Universities that have shaped contemporary Indian legal education by emphasising interdisciplinary study, research, and professional skills. Together with MNLU Mumbai and MNLU Nagpur, it represents Maharashtra's effort to institutionalise specialised legal education at par with established NLUs elsewhere in the country.
