Career
Early work
Mendonsa established himself as an arranger and keyboardist for advertising music, working on a large number of television and radio commercials in India. In 1997, Mendonsa joined Shankar Mahadevan and Ehsaan Noorani to form the composer trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. Mendonsa regularly performs live with Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy in concerts across India and internationally. He continues to work as a music producer and arranger, and has contributed to advertising jingles, non-film albums and television projects.
Style and contribution
Within the trio, Mendonsa is generally associated with harmonic arrangement, keyboard programming and Western classical and jazz influences, complementing Mahadevan's vocal and Indian classical orientation and Noorani's rock and guitar-driven sensibility. This blend has been credited with shaping a sound that integrates Indian melodic traditions with Western pop, rock, electronica and orchestral textures, particularly influential in Hindi film music of the 2000s and 2010s.
Awards and recognition
As part of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Mendonsa has received multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Music Director, National Film Award recognition for the score of Kal Ho Naa Ho, and several IIFA, Screen, Zee Cine and Mirchi Music awards across the trio's career.
Significance
Mendonsa is recognised as one of the leading composer–arrangers in contemporary Indian popular music. The work of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy is regarded as a defining presence in Hindi film music since the turn of the 21st century, with their soundtracks contributing both commercial hits and critically acclaimed scores. His role within the trio has been notable for bringing a strong arranging and harmonic foundation to their compositions.
