Background and concept
The show was developed by Balaji Telefilms as a contemporary Indian adaptation of the Dashwood sisters' story from Sense and Sensibility, reset within a Punjabi family in Mumbai. While the early storyline drew from Austen's framework, the narrative quickly evolved into an original long-running serial centred on themes of marriage, family bonds, separation, and reunion.
The narrative initially revolves around two sisters, Pragya and Bulbul Arora, daughters of Sarla Arora, who runs a marriage hall. Their lives become entwined with the Mehra family, particularly the music-industry tycoon Abhi (Abhishek Prem Mehra). The marriage of Pragya and Abhi, and the recurring cycles of misunderstanding, separation, and reconciliation, form the central arc of the show.
Cast
The principal cast through the show's first major arc included:
- Sriti Jha as Pragya Arora Mehra
- Shabir Ahluwalia as Abhishek "Abhi" Prem Mehra
- Mrunal Thakur as Bulbul Arora (early seasons)
- Arjit Taneja as Purab Khanna
- Leena Jumani and later Naina Singh and Pooja Banerjee as Rhea Mehra/Prachi Arora in subsequent generation arcs
- Krishna Kaul as Ranbir Kapoor
- Supriya Shukla as Sarla Arora
Following a major leap and recasting, the show shifted focus to a younger generation of characters, with new leads taking forward the storyline.
Production
Kumkum Bhagya is shot primarily at Balaji Telefilms' production facilities in Mumbai. The show's title track, composed and sung by Arko Pravo Mukherjee, became widely recognised and is considered among the more memorable Indian television theme songs of the 2010s.
Broadcast and reception
The serial airs on Zee TV in its prime-time slot and streams on ZEE5. It has consistently figured among the top-rated Hindi general entertainment channel programmes in BARC weekly ratings, particularly during 2016–2019. Dubbed versions are telecast on Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam (as Chembarathi-adjacent slot programming), and Zee Bangla, expanding its viewership across South Asia. Internationally, the show is broadcast in countries with significant South Asian diaspora populations and has been particularly popular in parts of Africa, where it has been dubbed into local languages.
Spin-off
Kundali Bhagya, a direct spin-off, premiered on Zee TV on 12 July 2017. It centres on the Luthra family and characters connected to the Mehra family of Kumkum Bhagya, and stars Shraddha Arya and Dheeraj Dhoopar (later replaced by Shakti Arora) in the lead roles. Kundali Bhagya itself became a long-running ratings leader.
Awards
The show and its cast have received recognition at industry awards including the Zee Rishtey Awards, Indian Telly Awards, Gold Awards, and Lions Gold Awards. Sriti Jha and Shabir Ahluwalia have both received multiple awards in popular and jury categories for their performances.
Significance
Kumkum Bhagya is regarded as a defining property of Zee TV's 2010s programming line-up and a key contributor to Balaji Telefilms' television catalogue alongside earlier hits such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasautii Zindagii Kay. Its sustained ratings performance and the success of its spin-off helped consolidate the "Bhagya" franchise as a recognisable brand in Hindi general entertainment television.
