Overview

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (English: Something Happens) is a 1998 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film written and directed by Karan Johar in his directorial debut. The film was produced by Yash Johar under the Dharma Productions banner. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles, with Salman Khan in an extended special appearance, alongside Sana Saeed, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo, Farida Jalal and Archana Puran Singh in supporting roles.

Released on 16 October 1998, the film was a major commercial success and became the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. It is widely regarded as a defining work of Hindi cinema in the late 1990s and helped establish Dharma Productions as a leading mainstream studio.

Plot

The story is told in two parts. In the first half, set in the fictional St. Xavier's College, Rahul Khanna (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali Sharma (Kajol) are inseparable best friends. Rahul falls for the elegant new student Tina Malhotra (Rani Mukerji), unaware that Anjali secretly loves him. Heartbroken, Anjali leaves the college, and Rahul marries Tina. Tina dies shortly after giving birth to a daughter, also named Anjali, leaving behind eight birthday letters for the child.

The second half, set eight years later, follows the young Anjali (Sana Saeed) as she reads the letters and sets out to reunite her father with his lost friend, who is now engaged to Aman Mehra (Salman Khan).

Production

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai marked Karan Johar's debut as a director. Johar, the son of producer Yash Johar, had earlier worked as an assistant on Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). The film was shot in Mumbai, Mauritius and Scotland. Costume design by Manish Malhotra played a notable role in shaping the on-screen look of the lead actors and influenced fashion trends among urban Indian youth in the late 1990s.

Soundtrack

The music was composed by the duo Jatin–Lalit, with lyrics by Sameer. The soundtrack was released by Sony Music and was among the best-selling Hindi film albums of 1998. Notable tracks include the title song "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayee", "Ladki Badi Anjaani Hai", "Saajanji Ghar Aaye" and "Yeh Ladka Hai Allah". The playback singers included Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Manpreet Akhtar and Kumar Sanu.

Reception and box office

The film opened to strong commercial response across India and overseas markets. It became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1998 and was particularly successful in the United Kingdom and other overseas territories with significant Indian diaspora populations, contributing to the growing recognition of Hindi cinema as a global commercial force.

Awards

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. At the 44th Filmfare Awards, the film swept the major categories, winning eight awards, including:
