Overview

Krrish is an Indian Hindi-language superhero film franchise created, produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan under the banner of Filmkraft Productions. The franchise stars Hrithik Roshan in the lead role and is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most prominent attempts at a sustained superhero film series in Indian cinema. The series began with Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), a science-fiction film about an extraterrestrial encounter, and continued with the explicit superhero films Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013).

Background

The franchise originated with Koi... Mil Gaya, in which Hrithik Roshan played Rohit Mehra, a developmentally challenged young man who befriends an alien named Jadoo. The alien grants Rohit enhanced intellect and strength through solar energy. The film, set largely in Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh, drew inspiration from international science-fiction works while adapting the narrative for an Indian family audience. It also featured Preity Zinta and Rekha in prominent roles.

The success of Koi... Mil Gaya led Rakesh Roshan to extend the universe into a superhero narrative. The sequel, Krrish (2006), introduced Rohit's son Krishna, who inherits his father's abilities and adopts a masked identity. Priyanka Chopra was cast opposite Hrithik Roshan, and action choreography was handled by Hong Kong stunt coordinator Tony Ching Siu-tung, marking one of the early high-profile international collaborations of its kind in Hindi cinema.

The franchise's origin film, blending coming-of-age drama with science fiction. It won the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Best Actor for Hrithik Roshan, among other honours.

Krrish (2006)

The first explicit superhero entry, focusing on Krishna Mehra's journey to Singapore, where he assumes the masked persona "Krrish" to confront the antagonist Dr. Siddhant Arya, played by Naseeruddin Shah. The film was a major commercial success and notable for its visual effects and action set pieces.

Krrish 3 (2013)

The third instalment featured Krrish battling the genetically engineered villain Kaal, portrayed by Vivek Oberoi, and his shape-shifting ally Kaya, played by Kangana Ranaut. The film expanded the universe with a roster of mutant antagonists. It opened to record-breaking box office numbers at the time of its release.

Production and crew

All three films have been produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan under Filmkraft Productions. The musical score across the franchise has been composed by Rajesh Roshan, Rakesh Roshan's brother. The visual effects, particularly in Krrish 3, were undertaken by Indian VFX studios including Red Chillies VFX, marking a significant moment in the growth of domestic visual-effects work for Hindi cinema.

Future instalments

A fourth film, tentatively titled Krrish 4, has been publicly discussed by Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan on multiple occasions as a continuation of the series. As of the most recent confirmed information, the project has been in development.

Significance

The Krrish franchise holds a notable position in Indian popular culture for being among the first home-grown superhero properties to achieve mainstream success. It has influenced merchandising, television animation spin-offs and comic adaptations aimed at children, and is frequently cited as a benchmark in discussions of Indian superhero cinema. The character Krrish, with his trademark black mask, leather jacket and flowing scarf, is one of the most recognisable original superhero designs created by Indian filmmakers.
