Background
The franchise originated with Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), a science-fiction film inspired thematically by extraterrestrial-encounter cinema. In it, Hrithik Roshan played Rohit Mehra, a developmentally challenged young man whose life changes after contact with an alien named Jadoo. The film's commercial and critical success prompted Rakesh Roshan to develop a sequel that shifted the storytelling towards the superhero genre, leading to Krrish (2006), in which Rohit's son Krishna acquires superhuman abilities and adopts the masked identity "Krrish".
The third instalment, Krrish 3 (2013), expanded the universe by introducing a fully realised superhero antagonist, Kaal, played by Vivek Oberoi, along with mutant characters referred to as "maanvars". The franchise is notable for being among the first in Hindi cinema to use significant visual effects budgets to depict superhero action.

Significance

- It is among the earliest Indian film series built around an original homegrown superhero rather than an adaptation of a foreign property.
- The films pioneered the use of large-scale visual effects, wirework and superhero choreography in mainstream Bollywood productions.
- The character Krrish, identified by a black mask and trench coat, has become an enduring pop-culture icon in India, with associated merchandise, comics and animated television content.
- The franchise demonstrated commercial viability for the superhero genre in Hindi cinema, paving the way for subsequent superhero-themed Indian productions.
Adaptations and tie-ins
The franchise has been extended through ancillary media including comic books published in association with Indian comics imprints, an animated television series titled Kid Krrish, and various consumer merchandise. The character has also appeared in promotional crossover material with public-interest campaigns in India.
