Background
The institution traces its origins to King George's Medical College, established in Lucknow during the colonial period and named in honour of King George V. For most of the twentieth century it functioned as a constituent medical college affiliated with the University of Lucknow, training generations of physicians and surgeons who went on to serve in academic, clinical, and administrative roles across India and abroad. The college's historic main building, with its distinctive Indo-Saracenic architecture, remains a landmark in the Chowk area of old Lucknow.
University status
The college was elevated to the status of an independent medical university by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, taking on its present name. Following this restructuring, KGMU broadened its academic portfolio to include independent faculties for medicine, dentistry, nursing, and paramedical sciences, and gained autonomy in curriculum design, examinations, and the conferment of degrees.
Academics
KGMU offers a range of programmes including the MBBS in medicine and the BDS in dentistry at the undergraduate level, postgraduate degrees such as MD, MS, and MDS across clinical and pre-clinical specialties, and super-specialty DM and MCh programmes. The university also runs nursing, physiotherapy, and allied health science courses, along with PhD programmes in basic and clinical sciences. Admission to most courses is conducted through national entrance examinations such as NEET-UG and NEET-PG.
