Background
The University of Lucknow traces its origins to a long-standing demand for a separate university for the Awadh region during the late colonial period. Prior to its establishment, students from Lucknow and neighbouring districts were affiliated with the University of Allahabad and the University of Calcutta. Local notables, including members of the taluqdari elite of Awadh, supported the proposal for an independent university in Lucknow, which culminated in legislative recognition by the United Provinces government.
The campus is situated in Lucknow and houses faculties, departments, libraries, and residential halls. Over the decades, the university has expanded to include multiple campuses and a network of affiliated colleges across districts in central Uttar Pradesh.
