Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) is a state public university in the Indian state of Kerala, devoted to teaching, research, and extension in the fields of veterinary science, animal husbandry, dairy science, and allied disciplines. The university is headquartered at Pookode in Wayanad district, and operates a network of constituent colleges, research stations, and farms across the state.

Overview

KVASU was established by the Government of Kerala to consolidate veterinary and animal sciences education and research, which had earlier been conducted under the Kerala Agricultural University. By bringing veterinary teaching, livestock research, and dairy science under a single dedicated university, the state aimed to strengthen capacity in animal health, livestock productivity, and rural livelihoods linked to dairying, poultry, and small ruminant farming.

Background

Kerala has a long tradition of organised veterinary education and animal husbandry extension. Veterinary education in the state was offered for several decades through the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Mannuthy in Thrissur, established in the 1950s, and later through the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Pookode in Wayanad. Both colleges originally functioned under the Kerala Agricultural University before being brought under the new specialised university.

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Its academic portfolio includes:

Research at KVASU spans animal disease diagnosis and control, livestock genetics and breeding, dairy and meat technology, feed and fodder development, wildlife health, and one-health concerns linking animal and human disease. Extension activities include farmer training, mobile veterinary services, and outreach in livestock-dependent regions of Kerala, including the Western Ghats districts of Wayanad and Idukki.

Significance

As Kerala's only university dedicated to veterinary and animal sciences, KVASU plays a central role in producing veterinary professionals for the state's animal husbandry department, dairy cooperatives, and private sector. It contributes to food security, rural employment, and zoonotic disease surveillance, particularly in a state where dairying and poultry are important components of small-farmer livelihoods.
