Kerala Agricultural University

Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) is a state public university located in Thrissur, Kerala, India. It is the principal institution in the state for higher education, research, and extension in agriculture and allied sciences. The university serves the agro-climatic conditions of Kerala, with a focus on crops such as coconut, rice, spices, plantation crops, and vegetables, along with livestock, fisheries, and forestry-related disciplines (now partly devolved to sister universities).

Background

Kerala is characterised by a humid tropical climate, smallholder farming systems, and a heavy dependence on plantation and homestead crops. The establishment of a dedicated agricultural university was envisaged as part of the national land-grant model promoted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), which encouraged each state to set up a university combining teaching, research, and extension in agriculture.

KAU was constituted by an Act of the Kerala State Legislature and integrated previously separate research stations and colleges in agriculture, veterinary sciences, fisheries, and forestry under a single university framework. Several of these constituent units predated the university and had been operating as departmental research stations or colleges.

Campus and locations

The main campus is at Vellanikkara, near Thrissur, which houses the central administration, the College of Agriculture, and a number of central research institutes. KAU also operates a network of regional and zonal agricultural research stations spread across the agro-ecological zones of Kerala, including stations in the highlands, midlands, coastal plains, and the Onattukara, Kuttanad, Pokkali, and Wayanad regions, each addressing locally significant crops and farming systems.

Academic programmes

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in disciplines including:

  • Agriculture (B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and specialisations)
  • Horticulture
  • Forestry
  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Climate Change Adaptation
  • Co-operation, Banking and Management as related to agriculture

Admissions to professional undergraduate programmes are conducted through the Kerala state entrance examination process, while postgraduate and doctoral admissions follow university-conducted tests and ICAR's all-India entrance examinations.

Research and extension

KAU undertakes crop improvement and management research with particular emphasis on rice, coconut, banana, pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, cassava, and vegetables suited to humid tropical conditions. The university has released a number of improved crop varieties and management practices, and publishes the Package of Practices Recommendations, a widely used technical reference for farmers and extension workers in Kerala.

Extension activities are carried out through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), agricultural research stations, and farm advisory services, working in coordination with the Kerala Department of Agriculture.

Reorganisation

The veterinary, animal sciences, and fisheries faculties that were earlier part of KAU were reconstituted into separate universities — the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) and the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) — which now operate independently of KAU.

Significance

As the apex agricultural research and education institution of Kerala, KAU plays a central role in supporting the state's agrarian economy, particularly in the context of small landholdings, plantation crops, and the unique paddy ecosystems of Kuttanad and Pokkali. Its variety releases, soil and crop advisories, and trained manpower contribute to both commercial agriculture and household-level food production in the state.
