Overview
Kalyan Jewellers operates a chain of large-format jewellery showrooms offering hallmarked gold ornaments, diamond-studded jewellery, and wedding collections aimed primarily at the Indian family market. The company is led by its founder T. S. Kalyanaraman as chairman and managing director, with his sons Rajesh Kalyanaraman and Ramesh Kalyanaraman serving as executive directors. The group's roots lie in a textile retail business run by the Kalyanaraman family in Thrissur before its diversification into jewellery.
History
The first Kalyan Jewellers showroom was opened in 1993 in Thrissur, Kerala, by T. S. Kalyanaraman. The brand expanded gradually within Kerala before establishing showrooms in other Indian states, eventually building a presence across south, west, north and east India.
In the 2010s, the company expanded internationally into the Gulf Cooperation Council region, opening showrooms in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, catering largely to expatriate Indian customers.
Private equity firm Warburg Pincus invested in the company in two rounds during the 2010s, taking a minority stake. Kalyan Jewellers India Limited completed its initial public offering in March 2021 and was subsequently listed on the BSE and the National Stock Exchange of India.
The company also operates an online jewellery platform branded Candere, which it acquired to enter the e-commerce segment.
Operations
Kalyan Jewellers follows a showroom-led retail model, supplemented by a franchise programme under which partners operate stores under the Kalyan brand using inventory and standards supplied by the company. Showrooms typically offer regional design collections tailored to local wedding and festive traditions, including sub-brands for diamond jewellery, polki and uncut diamond jewellery, and lightweight daily-wear ornaments.
Branding and advertising
The brand is known for an extensive celebrity endorsement strategy, having signed Indian film actors from multiple language industries as regional brand ambassadors. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan have served as long-standing national ambassadors, while figures from the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film industries have represented the brand in their respective markets.
Significance
Kalyan Jewellers is among the leading organised players in the largely unorganised Indian jewellery sector. Its growth reflects the broader shift in India towards branded, hallmarked jewellery retail, and the company is frequently cited alongside firms such as Tanishq, Malabar Gold and Diamonds, and Joyalukkas as part of the country's emergent national jewellery chains.
