Background

Tanishq was launched as the jewellery division of Titan, a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The brand was conceived to bring organised retail, standardised purity and modern design to a sector that was historically dominated by family-run jewellers and unorganised retailers.

A defining element of the brand has been its emphasis on hallmarked gold and verified purity at a time when consumer trust in unbranded jewellery purity was inconsistent. Tanishq introduced in-store karat meters to allow customers to test the purity of their existing gold, which contributed to its early reputation for transparency.
