Overview
Jodha Akbar is an Indian historical drama television series that aired on Zee TV from 18 June 2013 to 7 August 2015. Produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under the Balaji Telefilms banner, the show dramatised a fictionalised account of the relationship between the Mughal Emperor Akbar and his Rajput consort Jodha Bai. The series ran for over 560 episodes and became one of the most widely watched historical dramas on Indian television.

Background
The series draws inspiration from the popular legend of the marriage alliance between the Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar and the Rajput princess Jodha Bai of Amer. While the historicity of "Jodha" as Akbar's wife is debated by scholars, the figure has been part of folk tradition, literature, and cinema for decades, including the 2008 Hindi film Jodhaa Akbar directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.
Balaji Telefilms developed the television adaptation as a long-format saga, expanding beyond the marriage narrative to cover political intrigue in the Mughal court, military campaigns, and the dynamics among Akbar's nobles, queens and family members.

Plot
The story begins with the political circumstances leading to the marriage of Akbar with Jodha, daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amer, framed as a strategic alliance between the Mughals and the Rajputs of Amer. The early arc focuses on Jodha's reluctance, Akbar's gradual emotional bond with her, and the tensions this causes within the harem, particularly with Ruqaiya Begum and Akbar's foster mother Maham Anga. Subsequent episodes feature courtroom politics involving figures such as Bairam Khan, Adham Khan and Sharifuddin Hussain, and later trace the birth and upbringing of Akbar's heir, Jahangir (Salim).
Production
The series was shot primarily at sets constructed at ND Studios in Karjat, Maharashtra, with additional location shoots in Rajasthan. Costumes, jewellery and set design drew on Mughal and Rajput motifs. The title track was composed by Sanjoy Chowdhury, with lyrics by Sameer Anjaan. Sound design and battle choreography were notable production elements that contributed to the show's scale.
Reception and significance
Jodha Akbar received strong viewership ratings during its run on Zee TV and was credited with reviving interest in the historical genre on Hindi general entertainment channels in the 2010s. Rajat Tokas's portrayal of Akbar drew particular praise, and the lead pair won several Indian television awards, including recognition at the Zee Rishtey Awards. The series was dubbed and broadcast in multiple languages outside India, including Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and was telecast in countries such as Afghanistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and several Middle Eastern markets, where it gained a substantial following.
The show is regarded as one of the flagship historical productions of Balaji Telefilms and contributed to a wave of subsequent period dramas on Indian television, including titles centred on Maharana Pratap, Chandragupta Maurya, and Razia Sultan.
