Overview
The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is an autonomous institution dedicated to research and teaching in astronomy and astrophysics. Located on the campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune, Maharashtra, it was established to promote the growth of astronomy and astrophysics among the Indian university community by providing a centre of excellence accessible to faculty and students from universities across India.

Background
IUCAA was set up by the University Grants Commission of India as an inter-university centre, a model designed to give university teachers and researchers access to advanced research facilities that individual universities may not be able to maintain on their own. The cosmologist Jayant Narlikar served as its founder director and shaped its early academic culture, which emphasises both frontline research and outreach to the wider university community.
The centre is housed on land provided by the University of Pune (now Savitribai Phule Pune University), and its campus, designed by architect Charles Correa, has itself become a notable landmark in Pune.
Activities
Research
Research at IUCAA spans theoretical and observational astrophysics, including cosmology, gravitation, high-energy astrophysics, stellar and galactic astronomy, and instrumentation. The faculty and visitors publish in international journals and collaborate with observatories and space missions in India and abroad.
Visitor and associateship programme
A central feature of IUCAA is its visitor programme, under which university teachers, postdoctoral fellows, and students from across India visit for short or extended periods to pursue research. The associateship scheme allows selected academics from Indian universities to use the centre's facilities regularly.
Teaching and training
IUCAA conducts schools, workshops, and refresher courses in astronomy and astrophysics for university teachers and graduate students. It also runs a doctoral programme in collaboration with affiliated universities.
Facilities
- A specialised astronomy and astrophysics library.
- Computing facilities for theoretical and data-intensive research.
- Instrumentation laboratories supporting the development of optical and other astronomical instruments.
- The IUCAA Girawali Observatory, which hosts a 2-metre optical telescope used for research and student training.
Public outreach
IUCAA maintains an active programme of public lectures, science exhibitions, sky-watching sessions, and educational material aimed at school students, teachers, and the general public. It also operates a public outreach facility on the campus.
Significance
IUCAA has played a significant role in building research capacity in astronomy and astrophysics within Indian universities, which historically had limited access to advanced astronomical facilities. By pooling resources and offering visiting positions, it complements the work of dedicated institutes such as the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and contributes to Indian participation in international projects in observational astronomy, gravitational-wave physics, and space-based astronomy.
