Background

The university was established by an Act of the Bombay Legislature in 1949, with its first vice-chancellor being Mahamahopadhyaya Datto Vaman Potdar. The campus is situated in the Ganeshkhind area of Pune, on a sprawling estate that was historically the residence of the Governor of Bombay. The main administrative building, often called the Main Building, is a heritage structure dating to the 19th century.

SPPU functions as an affiliating university for a large number of colleges and institutions across the districts of Pune, Ahmednagar, and Nashik in Maharashtra. It offers programmes across faculties including science and technology, humanities, commerce and management, mensural studies, law, and inter-disciplinary studies, alongside doctoral research.

Renaming

In 2014, the Government of Maharashtra renamed the institution from the University of Pune to Savitribai Phule Pune University in honour of Savitribai Phule (1831–1897), the pioneering 19th-century educator and social reformer who, with her husband Jyotirao Phule, established some of the earliest schools for girls and lower-caste children in India.

Academics and campus

The university campus hosts numerous departments, research centres, and institutes covering disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biotechnology, computer science, mathematics, statistics, geography, languages, economics, political science, sociology, education, and management. The Jayakar Library on campus serves as the central library and houses a significant collection of books, journals, and rare manuscripts. The university also accommodates centres associated with foreign-language learning, defence and strategic studies, and women's studies.

Pune's status as a major educational hub — sometimes referred to as the "Oxford of the East" — is closely tied to the presence and growth of this university and its affiliated colleges.

Significance

SPPU is among the principal centres of higher education in Maharashtra and contributes to research output in both the sciences and humanities. Its renaming after Savitribai Phule symbolically links one of the country's leading universities with the legacy of female education and social reform in India.
