Background
The Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) were set up by the Government of India to provide structured, standardised training in hospitality and food service management to support the country's growing hotel and tourism industry. IHM Mumbai is part of this national network, which is academically coordinated by the NCHMCT, headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Through this arrangement, courses are designed centrally to ensure uniform curricula, examinations and certification across all participating institutes.
Academic programmes
Like other central IHMs, the Mumbai institute typically offers:
- A three-year Bachelor's degree programme in Hospitality and Hotel Administration, conducted jointly by NCHMCT and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
- Diploma and craft-level courses in food production, food and beverage service, front office operations, and housekeeping.
- Short-term certificate courses aimed at working professionals and skill development.
Admission to the principal degree programme is generally through the NCHM JEE, a national entrance examination conducted for all centrally affiliated IHMs.
Significance
As the IHM serving the Mumbai metropolitan region, the institute draws upon the city's status as a major hub for hotels, airlines, cruise lines, quick service restaurants and corporate catering. Its graduates are recruited into hotel chains, food service companies, the cruise industry, airline catering, institutional catering and entrepreneurial ventures in food and beverage. The institute also contributes to applied nutrition and culinary research within the wider NCHMCT framework.
