Indrajitsinhji

Indrajitsinhji Kesarisinhji Jadeja (1937–2011) was an Indian cricketer who played as a wicketkeeper. He represented India in Test cricket during the mid-1960s and was associated with Saurashtra and other domestic teams in Indian first-class cricket. He belonged to the princely Jadeja lineage of the Saurashtra region in Gujarat, a family that produced several notable Indian cricketers.

Background

Indrajitsinhji came from the Jadeja family of Saurashtra, a clan with deep links to Indian cricket. His relatives in the sport include Hanumantsinhji and the later Test cricketer Ajay Jadeja. He developed his cricket in the western Indian domestic circuit at a time when wicketkeeping in India was a competitive position contested by several specialists.

Career

Indrajitsinhji played first-class cricket in India and earned selection to the national side as a wicketkeeper. He featured in Test matches for India in the 1960s, a period during which India played series against opponents such as New Zealand, the West Indies and England. His international career was relatively brief, as Indian selectors during the era rotated wicketkeepers including Budhi Kunderan and Farokh Engineer.

In domestic cricket he was associated with Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy, the premier first-class competition in India organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Significance

Indrajitsinhji is remembered as one of the wicketkeepers who represented India in the transitional 1960s and as a member of the Jadeja cricketing family of Saurashtra, a region that has contributed several players to Indian cricket.
