Overview
Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals is one of the oldest and most prominent government medical institutions in India, located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. History
The institution traces its origins to the early nineteenth century, when the colonial administration recognised the need for formal medical training in the Bombay Presidency. Sir Robert Grant, Governor of Bombay, was instrumental in the founding of the college, and the institution was named in his honour following his death. The associated hospital, named after Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy, a prominent Parsi philanthropist who contributed significantly to its establishment, became a cornerstone of public health infrastructure in the city.
Over the decades, the institution expanded considerably, adding specialised departments, postgraduate programmes, and additional hospital units. It witnessed significant developments during the post-independence period as the Government of Maharashtra took over administration and expanded its public health mandate.
Academics
Grant Medical College offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate programmes leading to MD, MS, and Diploma qualifications are offered across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical specialities. The college also participates in super-speciality and fellowship training in collaboration with the attached hospital units.
The academic curriculum follows the guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India. Teaching is conducted through a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory work, and extensive clinical postings in the attached hospitals.
Hospital and Clinical Training
The Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals comprises several hospital units attached to the college, including Sir J. J. Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal (G. T.) Hospital, St. George's Hospital, and Cama and Albless Hospital, among others. Together, these units form one of the largest public hospital complexes in Maharashtra.
The hospitals function as tertiary care referral centres and receive patients from across Mumbai and from other districts of Maharashtra. Clinical departments cover a broad spectrum including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, ophthalmology, and various super-specialities. The high patient load provides medical students and residents with extensive hands-on clinical exposure, which is considered a defining feature of training at this institution.
Campus and Facilities
The campus is situated in the Byculla area of Mumbai and occupies a historically significant urban site. The older buildings reflect colonial-era architecture, while newer blocks have been added over time to accommodate expanded facilities. The campus includes lecture halls, dissection halls, laboratories, a central library, residential quarters for students and resident doctors, and administrative offices.
The library maintains a collection of medical texts, journals, and digital resources to support academic and research activities. Hostel accommodation is available for students, with separate facilities for male and female residents.
Admissions
Admission to the MBBS programme is through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency. Seats are allocated through the centralised counselling process managed by the Maharashtra state authorities and, for all-India quota seats, through the Medical Counselling Committee. Postgraduate admissions are similarly conducted through NEET-PG.
Student Life
The institution has an active student community with various academic societies, cultural associations, and sports activities. Annual events include cultural festivals, inter-college competitions, and medical conferences. Student associations organise health camps and community outreach programmes in collaboration with the hospital units.
