Gauahar Khan was born on 23 August 1983 in Pune, into a Pathan Muslim family. Her elder sister, Nigaar Khan, is also an actress and was a contestant on Bigg Boss in an earlier season. Gauahar began her career in modelling, and was a finalist at the Femina Miss India contest in 2002, where she was placed among the top contestants.

After her Femina Miss India placement in 2002, Gauahar pursued modelling and walked the ramp for several Indian designers. She made her acting debut in supporting roles in Hindi cinema in the late 2000s.

Gauahar appeared in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009), directed by Shimit Amin and produced by Yash Raj Films, starring Ranbir Kapoor.
