Background and production
Ali Abbas Zafar, previously known for directing commercial Hindi films such as Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and Bharat (2019), made his web series debut with Tandav. The show was written by Gaurav Solanki, co-writer of the National Award–winning film Article 15 (2019). Filming was carried out primarily in Delhi and Mumbai. The first season comprises nine episodes.
Controversy
Shortly after release, Tandav drew objections over scenes depicting Hindu deities and dialogue perceived as derogatory to religious sentiments, as well as scenes set in a university campus. Multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered in states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka against the makers, director, writer, lead actor, and the head of Amazon Prime Video India.
The makers issued a public apology and Amazon Prime Video stated that it would implement modifications to the affected scenes. Several episodes were subsequently re-edited. The matter reached the Supreme Court of India, where the makers sought protection from arrest. The case became one of the early high-profile incidents prompting public discussion on regulation of OTT (over-the-top) streaming content in India.
Regulatory impact
The controversy around Tandav, alongside concerns over other streaming titles in the same period, contributed to the regulatory environment that led to the notification of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 by the Government of India in February 2021. These rules introduced a tiered grievance redressal framework and a self-regulatory code of ethics for OTT platforms operating in India.
Reception
Critical response to the series was mixed. Reviewers commented on the performances of Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, while opinions on the writing, pacing and political portrayal varied. The controversy and subsequent edits drew further attention to the show's reach and to debates on creative freedom on streaming platforms in India.
Significance
Tandav is frequently cited in discussions of OTT content regulation in India and is considered a notable case study in the evolving relationship between streaming platforms, audiences, and statutory oversight. It also marked Ali Abbas Zafar's transition from theatrical films to long-form streaming content and was among the prominent Hindi political dramas to release on a global streaming platform in early 2021.
