Background

The shipyard traces its origins to a small private workshop established in the 19th century on the banks of the Hooghly river at Garden Reach, Kolkata, which over time grew into a marine engineering and ship repair facility. The Government of India took over the firm in 1960, and it was reconstituted as a public sector undertaking. The yard was subsequently brought under the Ministry of Defence to support indigenous warship construction.

Operations

GRSE operates shipbuilding facilities along the Hooghly river in Kolkata, with units handling hull fabrication, outfitting, engineering and ship repair. The company's activities are broadly grouped into three streams:

  • Shipbuilding: warships, patrol vessels, fast attack craft, landing craft, survey vessels, fleet tankers and commercial ships.
  • Engine production: assembly and manufacture of marine diesel engines under licence.
  • Engineering: portable steel bridges (Bailey-type), deck machinery, pumps and marine sewage treatment plants.

Notable products

GRSE has delivered a wide range of platforms to the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, including anti-submarine warfare corvettes of the Kamorta class (Project 28), missile corvettes of the Khukri and Kora classes, landing ship tanks, fast attack craft, water jet fast attack craft, offshore patrol vessels, survey vessels and inshore patrol vessels. The yard has also built export vessels for foreign navies and merchant clients.

Milestones

  • Acquisition by the Government of India in 1960 and reconstitution as a public sector unit.
  • Transfer to the Ministry of Defence and emergence as a dedicated warship builder.
  • Delivery of the first indigenously designed warship for the Indian Navy from the yard, marking the beginning of sustained naval construction.
  • Conferment of Mini Ratna status by the Government of India, recognising operational and financial autonomy.
  • Initial public offering and listing of shares on Indian stock exchanges.

Significance

GRSE is among a small group of Indian shipyards capable of building combatant warships, alongside Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Cochin Shipyard and Hindustan Shipyard. It has played a central role in the indigenisation of naval platforms and in supporting the Indian Navy's blue-water capabilities. The yard is also significant to the industrial economy of Kolkata and West Bengal, contributing to defence manufacturing employment along the Hooghly.
