Overview
Cochin Shipyard undertakes the construction of a wide range of vessels including bulk carriers, tankers, passenger ships, offshore support vessels, defence vessels, and aircraft carriers. It also provides ship repair services for Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and commercial vessels, including periodic refit and dry-docking of large ships. The yard is located on the eastern shore of the Kochi backwaters, close to the Port of Cochin.
Background and history
Cochin Shipyard was incorporated in 1972 as a fully owned Government of India company. Commercial shipbuilding operations began in the following years, and the yard delivered its first vessel, the bulk carrier Rani Padmini, in the early 1980s. Over the decades, CSL expanded its dry docks, slipways, and outfitting facilities to handle progressively larger vessels.
The shipyard was conferred the status of a Miniratna Central Public Sector Enterprise, recognising its operational and financial performance. In 2017, CSL completed an initial public offering and was listed on Indian stock exchanges, with the Government of India retaining majority ownership.
Major projects
- INS Vikrant — India's first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier, constructed for the Indian Navy and commissioned in 2022.
- Construction of fast patrol vessels and offshore patrol vessels for the Indian Coast Guard.
- Building of double-hull oil tankers, bulk carriers, and platform supply vessels for domestic and international clients.
- Construction of electric and hybrid passenger ferries, including ferries for the Kochi Water Metro project.
- Periodic refits of Indian Navy and Coast Guard ships, and dry-docking of large commercial vessels.
Facilities and expansion
The main yard at Kochi includes a building dock and a ship repair dock capable of accommodating large vessels, along with associated workshops and outfitting berths. CSL has been expanding its capacity through a new dry dock and an International Ship Repair Facility at Kochi, intended to increase the yard's ability to repair very large vessels and handle multiple shipbuilding projects in parallel. The company has also acquired and operates ship repair units at other Indian ports, including facilities associated with Hooghly Dock and Kolkata.
Significance
Cochin Shipyard is regarded as a strategic asset in India's maritime and defence sector. Its delivery of INS Vikrant marked a milestone for indigenous warship construction, and its sustained programme of building defence and commercial vessels supports the Government of India's "Make in India" and self-reliance objectives in shipbuilding. The yard is also a major industrial employer in Kerala and a key node of the Kochi maritime cluster.
