Background

The Indian wine industry developed rapidly in the early 2000s, with Maharashtra and Karnataka emerging as the leading producer states. Maharashtra, which accounts for the majority of domestic wine production, supports the industry through dedicated grape-growing zones in districts such as Nashik, Pune and Sangli. Four Seasons Wines was launched in this period, with its vineyard and winery situated in Baramati in Pune district.

The brand was developed by United Spirits Limited, then a part of the UB Group led by Vijay Mallya. After Diageo acquired a controlling stake in United Spirits in 2013–2014, Four Seasons came under the broader Diageo portfolio in India.

Operations and products

The winery produces wines across the still and sparkling categories, including varietal wines made from international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. Its product line is generally segmented into entry-level, reserve and premium tiers, sold primarily in the Indian domestic market.

Significance

Four Seasons is among the larger branded wine producers in India, alongside Sula Vineyards, Grover Zampa and Fratelli Wines. Its association with United Spirits and Diageo has given it wide distribution through the established spirits network in the country, contributing to the mainstreaming of domestic wine consumption in urban Indian markets.
