Background

United Spirits traces its lineage to McDowell & Company, a trading firm established in the 19th century that later moved into the production of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL). Under the UB Group, led by Vittal Mallya and subsequently his son Vijay Mallya, the spirits business expanded substantially through new product launches and acquisitions.

The company emerged in its modern form in the early 2000s following the consolidation of several spirits entities of the UB Group, including McDowell & Company, Herbertsons, Phipson Distillery and Triumph Distillers and Vintners. The merged entity was named United Spirits Limited.
