Production
Jeethu Joseph developed the script around the idea of an ordinary man's intelligence being pitted against an organised investigation. Principal photography was carried out largely in the high ranges of Idukki, with locations chosen to reflect the rural setting central to the narrative. The film was shot over a relatively short schedule, with Mohanlal joining the project after Joseph narrated the script to him.
Music
The soundtrack and background score were composed by Anil Johnson. The film's restrained use of music, particularly during its tense second half, was noted as a significant element of its storytelling.
Release and reception
Drishyam was released theatrically on 19 December 2013. It opened to strong word of mouth and became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films at the time of its release, with extended theatrical runs in Kerala. Critics praised the screenplay, Mohanlal's performance, Asha Sarath's portrayal of the investigating officer, and the film's restrained, suspenseful direction.

The film received several honours at the Kerala State Film Awards and Filmfare Awards South, with recognition for its writing, direction, and performances, particularly those of Mohanlal and Asha Sarath.

Sequel
A direct sequel, Drishyam 2, written and directed by Jeethu Joseph and again starring Mohanlal and Meena, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 19 February 2021. It continues the story of Georgekutty several years after the events of the first film.
Significance
Drishyam is considered a landmark in Malayalam cinema for popularising the family-thriller format and demonstrating the commercial viability of content-driven films across Indian languages. Its success contributed to a wider trend of pan-Indian remakes of Malayalam scripts and reinforced Mohanlal's standing as a leading actor capable of carrying tightly written suspense narratives. The film is frequently studied as an example of effective screenwriting in contemporary Indian cinema.
