Background

The university was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to consolidate health sciences education within the state under a single affiliating body, on the model of similar specialised health universities created in other Indian states. It is named in honour of N. T. Rama Rao, the actor and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

The university brings together institutions offering courses in modern medicine (MBBS, MD, MS), dentistry (BDS, MDS), nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Unani, and Naturopathy and Yoga. Affiliated colleges include both government-run institutions and private self-financing colleges spread across the districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Functions

  • Affiliating colleges of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and AYUSH within Andhra Pradesh.
  • Prescribing curricula and standards of instruction for affiliated programmes.
  • Conducting university examinations and awarding degrees and diplomas.
  • Coordinating admissions to health sciences courses in line with state and national regulations.
  • Promoting research in health sciences through affiliated institutions.

Administration

The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor and is governed by statutory bodies including the Executive Council, Academic Senate, and Faculty Boards, in accordance with the legislation under which it was constituted. The Governor of Andhra Pradesh serves as the Chancellor, as is the convention for state universities in India.

Significance

As the dedicated health sciences university for Andhra Pradesh, the institution plays a central role in standardising medical and allied health education across the state. By concentrating regulatory, examination, and degree-awarding functions for health sciences in one body, it allows general universities to focus on other disciplines while enabling uniform academic standards in clinical and allied training.
