Dhemaji district lies on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in upper Assam, bordered by Arunachal Pradesh to the north and Lakhimpur district to the west. The region is largely rural and historically lacked access to higher education, which made the founding of a degree college in the district headquarters significant for local students who otherwise had to travel to North Lakhimpur, Jorhat or Dibrugarh for university-level studies.
