Background
The institution traces its origins to 1941, when it was established as the Delhi Polytechnic under the Government of India. In its early decades it offered diploma-level technical education across a range of disciplines, including engineering, architecture and applied arts.
In 1962, the engineering wing of the polytechnic was reorganised as the Delhi College of Engineering, which became affiliated to the University of Delhi. Under this affiliation it offered undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering and emerged as one of the most sought-after engineering colleges in northern India.
In 2009, the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi enacted legislation to upgrade the college to a full-fledged state university, and it was renamed Delhi Technological University. The change of status enabled the institution to design its own curriculum, conduct its own admissions and award its own degrees independently of the University of Delhi.
Campus and location
The university campus is situated on Bawana Road in Shahbad Daulatpur, in the north-western part of Delhi, near the boundary with Haryana. The campus houses academic departments, hostels, laboratories, libraries and sports facilities.
Academics
DTU offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in engineering, technology, applied sciences, management and allied disciplines. Programmes are organised through specialised departments such as Computer Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, and the Delhi School of Management.
Undergraduate admissions are conducted through the centralised national engineering entrance examination process, with seats reserved for candidates from Delhi as well as those from other states.
