Geography
Bokaro Steel City lies in the eastern part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, in a region historically rich in coal and iron ore deposits. The Damodar River flows through the area, and the city is situated at a moderate elevation in undulating terrain. The wider Bokaro district shares boundaries with several mineral-bearing districts of Jharkhand and was carved out of the erstwhile Dhanbad and Giridih districts.
Background and History
The city owes its origin to the establishment of the Bokaro Steel Plant, which was set up as a public-sector integrated steel facility under the Government of India with technical collaboration from the Soviet Union. Construction of the plant began in the 1960s, and commercial steel production commenced in the following decade. The plant was originally administered by Bokaro Steel Limited and was later merged into the Steel Authority of India Limited.
The city itself was developed as a planned township to support the steel plant, with sectors laid out in a grid pattern, dedicated residential quarters, schools, hospitals, parks and commercial centres. It is one of several Indian steel townships planned during the early decades after independence, alongside Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur.
