Geography

Bokaro district lies in the eastern part of Jharkhand, on the Chotanagpur Plateau. The Damodar river flows through the district and has historically defined settlement and industrial patterns, with the Tenughat Dam built across it forming a major reservoir within the district. The terrain is undulating, with forested hills, coal-bearing seams, and agricultural plains. The district shares borders with Dhanbad, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, and Purulia (West Bengal).

Administration

The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner and is divided into subdivisions and community development blocks. Chas and Bermo are among its principal subdivisions. Major urban centres include Bokaro Steel City, Chas, Phusro, Bermo, Jaridih, and Chandrapura. The district sends representatives to the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from constituencies such as Bokaro, Chandankiyari, Bermo, and Gomia, and falls within the Giridih and Dhanbad Lok Sabha constituencies in part.

History

The area now constituting Bokaro district was historically part of the Chotanagpur region under various local chieftaincies before coming under British administration in the 19th century. Industrial transformation began in the 20th century with the development of coalfields along the Damodar valley. The decisive change came in the 1960s, when the Government of India established the Bokaro Steel Plant under Bokaro Steel Limited (later merged into the Steel Authority of India Limited, SAIL) with technical collaboration from the Soviet Union. The plant's foundation in the 1960s and commissioning of its first blast furnace in 1972 led to the planned township of Bokaro Steel City.

The district itself was constituted on 1 April 1991, when it was carved out of Dhanbad and Giridih districts. With the creation of the state of Jharkhand on 15 November 2000, Bokaro became one of its constituent districts.

Economy

The economy of Bokaro is dominated by heavy industry and mining:

  • Steel: The Bokaro Steel Plant operated by SAIL is the central economic anchor, producing flat steel products.
  • Coal: The district falls within the Jharia and East Bokaro coalfields; Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) operates several mines, particularly around Bermo, Kargali, and Jarangdih.
  • Power: Thermal power generation is significant, with the Chandrapura and Bokaro thermal power stations of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and the Tenughat Thermal Power Station of TVNL.
  • Allied industry: Refractories, fabrication, and ancillary engineering units cluster around the steel plant.
  • Agriculture: Paddy is the principal crop, supported by pulses and vegetables, though the district is more industrial than agrarian in character.

Demographics and society

Bokaro is among the more urbanised districts of Jharkhand, owing to the planned township around the steel plant. The population is multilingual, with Hindi as the primary lingua franca alongside Bengali, Urdu, Santali, Khortha, and other regional tongues. The district has a substantial Adivasi population, including Santhal, Munda, and other communities, alongside settlers drawn from across India by the steel and coal industries.

Education and institutions

Bokaro hosts a range of educational and research institutions, including engineering colleges, the Bokaro General Hospital run by SAIL, schools operated by DAV, Chinmaya, Delhi Public School and the Kendriya Vidyalaya network, and the Bokaro Ispat Sahyogini Samaj-supported institutions. The City Centre at Sector IV functions as a commercial and civ
