Background
The university was established to consolidate teaching, research and extension activities in the agricultural sciences in the Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas regions, which together now constitute the state of Jharkhand. Before the formation of Jharkhand in 2000, these regions were part of Bihar, and the university initially served the southern, predominantly tribal and forested, parts of undivided Bihar.
BAU follows the integrated land-grant model adopted by Indian state agricultural universities, combining undergraduate and postgraduate education with on-station research and a network of extension services that reach farmers through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and field stations across Jharkhand.
Faculties and academic programmes
The university offers academic programmes through its constituent faculties, which include:
- Faculty of Agriculture
- Faculty of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry
- Faculty of Forestry
Programmes are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in disciplines such as agronomy, soil science, plant breeding and genetics, horticulture, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, veterinary medicine, animal nutrition, and forestry.
Research and extension
Research at BAU focuses on issues of relevance to the agro-climatic conditions of the Jharkhand plateau, including rainfed agriculture, upland and lowland rice, pulses and oilseeds, horticultural crops suited to the region (such as mango, litchi and vegetables), livestock and poultry development, and the management of forest and natural resources. The university operates research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in different districts of the state, which act as the principal channels for transfer of technology to farmers.
Campus
The main campus is situated at Kanke, on the outskirts of Ranchi, an area that hosts several agricultural and research institutions. The campus accommodates academic faculties, research farms, hostels and administrative offices.
Significance
As the only state agricultural university in Jharkhand, BAU plays a central role in human resource development for the state's agriculture and allied sectors, in adapting agricultural technologies to local conditions, and in supporting government programmes related to farm productivity, livestock development and tribal livelihoods.
