Ranchi is the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau in eastern India, it serves as the administrative headquarters of Ranchi district and is the largest city in the state. Once known as a summer retreat during the British period for its cooler climate, Ranchi today is an educational, industrial and administrative hub.

Geography
Ranchi lies on the southern part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau at an elevation of roughly 650 metres above mean sea level. The terrain is undulating, dotted with hills, waterfalls and forested tracts. The Subarnarekha river and its tributary the Karkari flow near the city. Notable natural features in and around Ranchi include the Hundru Falls, Jonha Falls (Gautamdhara), Dassam Falls and the Ranchi Hill with the Pahari Mandir at its summit.
Owing to its altitude, Ranchi has a more moderate climate than much of the surrounding Indo-Gangetic plain. Summers are warm but generally less severe than in lowland Bihar and Jharkhand, while winters are cool. The monsoon arrives between June and September.
History
The region around Ranchi has been historically associated with the Munda, Oraon, Ho and other Adivasi communities of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Under the Nagvanshi rulers, the area formed part of the Chota Nagpur estate.
During British rule, Ranchi developed as the administrative seat of the Chota Nagpur Division of the Bengal Presidency, and later of Bihar after the 1912 reorganisation. The British selected the town as a summer headquarters of Bihar province because of its hill climate. Several institutions established in this period, including hospitals and missionary schools, shaped the city's modern character.
The Chotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908, enacted to protect tribal land rights in the region, was a landmark piece of legislation rooted in struggles led by figures such as Birsa Munda, who is closely associated with the Ranchi region. Birsa Munda died in Ranchi jail in 1900, and the city houses memorials in his name.
After Indian independence, Ranchi remained a major city of Bihar. Following decades of demand for a separate state for the tribal-majority Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas regions, the state of Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar on 15 November 2000, with Ranchi designated as its capital.
Administration
Ranchi is governed by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation for civic functions. As the state capital, it hosts the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, the Raj Bhavan (residence of the Governor), and the Jharkhand High Court. The city is also the headquarters of Ranchi district and the South Chotanagpur division.
Economy
Ranchi's economy combines public sector industry, services, education and trade. The city is the headquarters of Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC), a public sector undertaking established in the 1950s, around which the industrial township of Dhurwa and HEC Colony developed. Other major institutions of national importance with industrial or research profiles in the city include the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, and the Mecon engineering consultancy.
The surrounding region is rich in mineral resources, particularly coal, iron ore and bauxite, which underpin much of the state's industrial base.
Education and research
Ranchi is an important educational centre in eastern India. Major institutions include:
- Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (IIM Ranchi)
- Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (located on the city's outskirts)
- National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi
- Ranchi University
- Central University of Jharkhand (with its main campus near the city)
- Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), a major government medical college and hospital
- Indian Institute of Information Technology, Ranchi (IIIT Ranchi)
- Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), one of India's oldest and most prominent psychiatric institutions
- Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS)
Transport
Ranchi is well connected by road, rail and air.
- Air: Birsa Munda Airport at Hinoo, named after the Adivasi leader Birsa Munda, links Ranchi with major Indian cities.
- Rail: Ranchi Junction and Hatia are the principal railway stations, served by the South Eastern Railway zone.
- Road: National Highways including NH-20, NH-23, NH-33 and NH-75 (under the renumbered system, NH-33 corresponds to parts of the Ranchi–Jamshedpur–Bahragora corridor) pass through or near the city, connecting it with Kolkata, Patna, Jamshedpur and other regional centres.
Culture
Ranchi reflects the cultural plurality of Jharkhand, with significant Adivasi populations alongside Hindi-, Urdu- and Bengali-speaking communities. Festivals such as Sarhul, Karam, Sohrai and Tusu are celebrated alongside Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh festivals. Christianity has a long presence through missionary activity dating back to the 19th century, and the city has historic churches including the Gossner Evangelical Lutheran cathedral and St. Mary's Cathedral.
Local cuisine includes regional specialities such as dhuska, pittha, rugra and bamboo shoot preparations. Sohrai and Paitkar painting traditions of the wider Jharkhand region are represented in cultural institutions in the city.
Sports
Ranchi is closely associated with cricket, particularly as the home town of former India national team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The JSCA International Stadium Complex, opened in the early 2010s, hosts international and domestic cricket matches. Hockey also has a strong presence in the region, with the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Stadium serving as a major venue.
