Background
The company was established to indigenise the manufacture of high-pressure pumps and compressors, which were largely imported in the early decades after independence. Its manufacturing plant is located at Naini, an industrial suburb of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, a region that hosts several heavy engineering units associated with India's public sector.
Operations
BPCL's product range is oriented toward process and energy industries. Its principal lines include:
- Reciprocating and centrifugal pumps used in refineries, fertiliser plants and water-handling installations.
- High-pressure reciprocating compressors for natural gas, hydrogen and process gas service.
- Seamless high-pressure gas cylinders used for storage and transport of industrial and specialty gases.
The company has historically supplied equipment to major Indian customers such as Indian Oil Corporation, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, GAIL, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum, the fertiliser corporations and various defence establishments.
Significance
As one of the few domestic manufacturers of high-pressure reciprocating compressors and seamless cylinders, BPCL has occupied a niche role in India's strategy of import substitution for capital goods used in core sectors. Its output has been linked closely with the expansion of refining, fertiliser and city gas distribution capacity in the country.
