Background
Daimler had been present in the Indian commercial vehicle market earlier through joint ventures, most notably with Tata Motors during the Tata-Mercedes-Benz era. After the dissolution of those arrangements, Daimler decided to enter the Indian truck market on its own with a brand engineered and priced for local conditions, while drawing on Mercedes-Benz technology and global standards. The result was BharatBenz, positioned between traditional domestic offerings and premium European imports.
Manufacturing and operations
DICV's plant at Oragadam in the Chennai industrial belt serves as the manufacturing, engineering and testing hub for the brand. The facility produces trucks for the Indian market under the BharatBenz badge and also exports vehicles and components to other markets, where they may carry the FUSO or Mercedes-Benz brand depending on the model and region. The site includes a vehicle testing track and an integrated supplier park.
Product range
- Light-duty trucks for intra-city distribution and goods movement.
- Medium-duty trucks aimed at regional haulage and construction applications.
- Heavy-duty trucks, including haulage tractors, tippers and construction vehicles.
- Buses for inter-city, staff and tourist segments, marketed under the BharatBenz bus range.

Significance
BharatBenz represents one of the larger foreign direct investments in the Indian commercial vehicle sector and is significant as an example of a global manufacturer creating a market-specific brand for India rather than importing existing global products unchanged. The brand has contributed to the modernisation of the Indian trucking industry by introducing features such as factory-fitted air-conditioned cabins, advanced braking systems, telematics and BS-VI compliant powertrains across its line-up. The Oragadam plant has also strengthened Chennai's position as a major automotive cluster in India.
